How To Refresh Your Existing Wardrobe for Interviews

by | Jun 21, 2022 | Miriam Mades, Professional Overview

Interviews can be intimidating, yet they’re a part of life. Thankfully, there are ways we can help prepare ourselves for them. One of the best ways to do this is to take a realistic look at our wardrobes.

There are many ways to refresh a wardrobe, regardless of the reason. Changes in our lives call for alterations here and there. But that doesn’t mean one has to go out and replace the entirety of their wardrobe. Instead, consider these more subtle changes.

Take Everything Out

One of the best ways to get a good idea of what is available within your wardrobe is to take it all out and get a good look at it. By touching every article of clothing, one can help ensure that they have a solid understanding of what they have available.

During this time, sort the clothes into a few piles—one for keeping, one for mending/alterations, and one for donation. Once done, take a step back and look at what remains. Now you know what additions will be necessary for your wardrobe.

Break out the Thread and Needles

Once your wardrobe has been properly sorted, it is time to mend any clothes needing some TLC. While mending clothes, remember to always turn them inside out before starting. Likewise, knowing how to do a basic running stitch is essential. For those that don’t know much about sewing, consider looking up an online guide. Alternatively, one can always bring their clothes to a tailor for a little extra help. Bringing clothes to a tailor has a second advantage: ensuring the clothes fit properly.

Proper Fitting

On that note, take the time to try on everything you own. Ensure that it fits properly. If it doesn’t, it is either time to donate it or bring it to a tailor or seamstress. Tailoring is one of the best ways to guarantee that the outfit fits perfectly. Remember, an outfit that fits appropriately will look more professional.

Have a Basic Foundation

All professional wardrobes have a similar foundation; articles of clothing in neutral colors, professional pants/skirts, tops/blouses, and other essential accessories (ties, jewelry, etc.). Take this further by considering what your wardrobe foundation should look like. Are there articles of clothing that can easily be transformed into multiple professional outfits? Take the time to mix and match what is available. Ideally, this will help you understand what may be missing from your wardrobe.

Look for Inspiration

There’s nothing wrong with looking for inspiration or guidance when creating or refreshing a wardrobe. Take a few minutes to hop on Pinterest or Instagram and see what professional wardrobe options are currently trending. Do any of these styles match your personal style? Or do they match what you want your unique style to become? If so, lean into it.
